Description

This small woodblock print is printed with black ink outlines on the front and is hand-colored in red, yellow, blue, and green from the back. The scene shows villagers gathering to watch a film, surrounded by bales of hay and seated on stools and benches under starry skies. On the makeshift movie screen, a thresher works its way across a field with mountains in the background, and a loudspeaker affixed to the left side of the screen blares the audio. Two children, one with pigtails, are seated towards to the front for a clearer view, a dog watches with rapt attention at the back, near the projectionist. Pairs of figures sit with their heads tipped towards each other, arms slung affectionately around each other’s shoulders.
