St. Lawrence College, an all-girls school, breaks tradition by admitting three male students, including Wen Shu-sen. They become classmates with Wong Yuk-chu and Tong Ka-tai, initially experiencing teasing but eventually fitting in. The young people enjoy spending time together, playing pranks on their teachers and principal for fun, but a small incident tests their friendships and romances.

Three witnesses, photographer Cheng Suqi, Oriental Research Society member Li Qiwen, and police chief Liang Ruijie, observed a councilor being shot. Suqi unwittingly took a photo, which was later destroyed. A committee member of the case's investigation, Prosecutor Jiang Zhushi, saw the photo at a film festival but did not see it again. After the Oriental Research Society faced arson, Qiwen discovered that it was an intelligence organization and was then chased. Suqi eventually found the photo, which revealed the witness and led to Qiwen's acquaintance with Zhushi and progress in the investigation. However, Zhushi persisted in investigating even after discovering the wide scope of the shooting case. Zhushi obtained a box of tapes with information about the case's motive and mastermind but was later killed.

Lee Ting-hong joins Guangji Hospital, where he meets the chairwoman's daughter, Xue Baoqi. They initially misunderstand each other but eventually become a couple. As they witness patients, and even acquaintances, die mysteriously, they investigate and discover that the events are related to the hospital's director, Tang Zhiyang, and the chief surgeon, Guo Weicheng.

They meet Fang Shiyu and are introduced to the leader of the Society, Han Tianchou. With the help of the White Browed Taoist and others, Han intends to overthrow the Qing dynasty, and Qianlong must investigate. Meanwhile, Muslim princess Ma Xianglei seeks Han's help to retrieve the Quran stolen by Qianlong. Xianglei and Qianlong develop mutual feelings, and so do Shiyu and Kong Kong, but they face many obstacles. Ultimately, Qianlong succeeds in dismantling the Society, but Xianglei is murdered. The culprit incites more conflict to harm Qianlong, who vows to avenge Xianglei by finding the true killer.

During the later years of the Kangxi Emperor's rule, his many sons were vying for the throne. The fourth prince, aided by Lusi, Nian Gengyao, and Han Chong, while the fourteenth prince had the support of martial arts master Zeng Jing. The competition between the two became intense. Lusi developed a romantic relationship with the fourth prince while Zeng Jing also had feelings for her, making their situation more complicated.
