Yokoyama Hideo Suspense

There are four episodes based on short stories by mystery novelist Yokoyama Hideo. Each episode depicts a stand-alone murder mystery.

蛇のひと

Soil

On the night of a blackout at the new residential area, ‘Soil New Town’, the Suzushiros, a family of three who live in that ordinary town, suddenly vanish into thin air. A pillar of salt rising up to the ceiling is left behind in the room of their daughter, Miki. Coincidentally, a heap of salt as high as a school building appears in the junior high school’s yard... At the top of that heap is the heart of a hamster. Dispatched to solve this bizarre case, Onoda Masako and Yokoi Mitsuo from the Kamikawa Precinct, are astonished by the strange pillar of salt. There is the head of the resident's association whose daily routine is obsessive surveillance, a youth who has been missing ever since the case occurred and an old woman who had an unsavoury experience in this town in the past. In the course of their investigation, Onoda and Yokoi begin to peer through to the underlying demeanours of the town’s residents and realise that malice and madness lurks beneath this seemingly quiet town.

Yoshiko Mita plays the role of Reiko Nagatsuta, a self-proclaimed great actress who is forced to write her autobiography while imprisoning three people.

Inpei Shirei

Amano Yoshihiko works at the giant Mizunami Bank. Trusted by the president, he is put in charge of hiding 700 million yen worth of bad debt. For the sake of the bank and the president, he puts all his effort into taking care of the matter, but he encounters many obstacles, including an ambitious politician and his secretary, a hostess club run by the former president's mistress, and even his own colleagues. Meanwhile, as Amano becomes more involved in the problem, his own personal life is falling apart.

Ueno Juri and the Five Bags

The series features Ueno taking on five roles in five episodes. As the title suggests, each episode involves a bag of some kind, such as a guitar case or a mysterious delivery package.

Yuukai

The Prime Minister's granddaughter is kidnapped. The police are at the mercy of the perpetrator, who leaves no trace. ...... is in turmoil. This is a suspense film about a battle between the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and a criminal with brains. The brainy kidnapper is played by Mikami Hiroshi, and the detective pursuing the case is played by Nishijima Hidetoshi.

The Flying Tire

A tire comes off a moving truck and becomes a deadly weapon, hitting a mother and child. The problem was caused by the vehicle manufacturer's failure to recall the vehicle, but the blame falls on the head of the delivery company who, despairing, searches for evidence that the recall was suppressed. Crossing paths with banks, police, weekly magazine writers, the victim's family, and various others, he eventually gets to the truth of the matter.

Pandora

Suzuki is an eccentric at university hospital who has been conducting a research to come up with a miracle drug for cancer on his own. One day, Suzuki finally succeeds in developing a new type of anticancer drug that completely hinders the self-renewal of all cancer stem cells. However, his colleagues do not seem to share his excitement, and he is not even allowed to carry out clinical trial on humans. Suzuki is disheartened and completely at a loss by this but then he comes across a girl, Manami, who is suffering from terminal cancer. With help from her, he successfully carries out clinical trial. Yet, things take an unexpected turn. What will become of Suzuki, Manami and all the others around them? What is the fate of this new drug? Pandora's box released all the evils as soon as it was opened. What is it that is ultimately left inside?

Ghost Hound

In an isolated region of Kyushu lies the town of Suiten. Though seeming small and modest, Suiten is not a picturesque place for a vacation, unless it is from the “Unseen World”. The Unseen World is the home of ghosts, but changes are now allowing the souls of the dead to pass over into the Apparent World, with unpredictable effects. Follow the journey of Taro, Makoto and Masayuki, as they cross between the two worlds, trying to unravel a great mystery.

Shigurui: Death Frenzy

At the beginning of the Edo Era, when people enjoyed a time of peace, Lord Tokugawa Tadanaga holds a fighting tournament. In the past, matches were fought with wooden swords. This time, real swords will be used. One-armed Fujiki Gennosuke and blind Irako Seigen will fight each other in this match. Both are disciples of Iwamoto Kogan, who is known as Japan's greatest swordsman. Each of them are determined to prove himself the successor of Iwamoto's school. However, there can only be one champion. So begins a story of intertwining fates, conflict, and strange destinies.

Mushi-Uta

Mushi-uta's story takes place in the near future. Ten years before the story's opening, strange insect-like creatures known as "Mushi" began appearing. The Mushi are able to consume peoples' dreams and thoughts in return for supernatural powers. At the end of episode one, protagonist Daisuke "Kakkou" Kusuriya encounters a young girl named Shiika Anmoto. The two, in time, become quite close. However, unbeknownst to Kakkou, Shiika is an escapee from a secret prison known as GARDEN where those posessed by the Mushi, known as the Mushitsuki are held. GARDEN's military force, the Special Environmental Conservation Executive Office, dispatches its finest killer to track down Shiika. However, they are faced with resistance from the Mushibane resistance organisation, led by the secretive "Ladybird."
