The Fogg’s multiple is one of four such multiple string pieces produced by Sandback for Barbara Krakow, in response to his first exhibition at the gallery, a 1993 installation in which his art was paired with that of Richard Serra. The multiples were featured in his next exhibition at Krakow, in 1995, another two-artist installation, this time pairing Sandback with the photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Each of the four 1994 string multiples was produced in an edition of 9; according to Krakow, and to the best of my knowledge, these are the only such multiples ever exhibited by Sandback. He is said to have produced a number of wire multiples in the late 70’s, but these were never shown publicly. [Note: Look into the history and whereabouts of these wire multiples.] Each of the string multiples comprises one or two relatively short lengths of colored, or painted, yarn secured at either end with brass fittings and a “certificate,” or instruction drawing, that details the configuration and precise placement of the piece on the wall. The back of the certificate instructs that the string must be installed according to the drawn and written specifications, but in any number of locations. Sandback leaves space on the back for the recording of each site at which the multiple is installed; according to the artist, the work is not complete until such information has been recorded for each installation. As all of Sandback’s other, unique, string pieces are site-specific, multiple should be understood to apply both to the edition of 9 and the option to install the work in various locations.
