This photograph represents the great South gate of Seoul; called Sung-nye-mun (Gate of Respecting Propriety) in Chosŏn times, it is called Nam-dae-mun (Great South Gate) today. The sign on the gate reads Sung-nye-mun, identifying the gate. Figures walk on the broad boulevard in the foreground, which is bordered by houses with thatched roofs.
