A Rockfest at Firebase Catherine: amplified guitars, a saxophone, drums and a electric organ backing up a GI “soul singer” set the sultry air throbbing at Firebase Catherine, dug in on a hill south of the Demilitarized Zone in Vietnam. Musicians and fans alike were members of the Third Brigade of the 101st Division. Around the outdoor amphitheatre were the symbols of the war-- wooden bunkers, sandbags, a helicopter-- but the GIs were momentarily “at home” with their own music.
