Samuel Bourne no. 1794. A verdant mountain landscape taken near the British hill station of Simla, which lies north of Delhi in the foothills of the Himalayas. Two large conifers stand in the foreground at the lower center of the composition. The landscape unfolds to the left to a high conical peak and a hazy rim of mountains standing in the far distance. The viewer is lead back into these spaces by tracing the path cut by a wide, modern road that curves back through the lower right of the composition. The leafy trees provide areas of dark tones and dappled sunlight that contrast with the lighter, softer tones of the mountains in the background.
