c. 1895-1901
Sketchbook with brown-cloth-covered cardboard covers; pencil sleeve; remains of cloth ties. Pages of off-white wove paper. Sewn page block. Sketchbook is incomplete, with fifteen pages remaining. Eight drawings. The pages are numbered in red-brown ink in the upper right corners. Several pages have been removed, including at least four between the front pastedown and page 1, one after page 2, and at least one after page 9. The page numbering apparently occurred after their removal. As a label on the front pastedown gives the original number of pages (30), it seems that a whole signature may be missing. Contents: Studies for Mrs. Cazalet and her Children (1900-01, private collection) and The Wyndham Sisters (1899, The Metropolitan Museum of Art); female profiles and figure studies, one with a child.
23.6 x 30.1 x 0.5 cm (9 5/16 x 11 7/8 x 3/16 in.)
To the artist's sisters, Violet (Mrs. Francis) Ormond and Emily Sargent, at his death, 1925; gift of Mrs. Ormond to the Fogg Art Museum, 1937.
