1635-1645
12.5 x 17.5 cm (4 15/16 x 6 7/8 in.)
Possibly Queen Christina of Sweden. Prince Livio Odescalchi , Rome (?-1713), by descent; to Odescalchi Family (1713-1957), sold; [through Sotheby’s, Rome, November 20, 1957, lot 67]; [to H.M. Calmann, New York (1957-1961)]. Agnes Mongan, Cambridge, MA and Elizabeth Mongan, Jenkintown, PA (by 1961-2002); to the Massachusetts Audubon Society, Lincoln, MA (2002-2003), sold; to Harvard University Art Museums, 2003. Notes: 1. The drawing was preserved in what Marcel Roethlisberger has called “The Animal Album” until the album was dismantled in 1957 after it was purchased at Sotheby’s by H. M. Calmann. Hence the listed provenance refers to the entire album until 1957, after which the drawing was sold separately. 2. Agnes and Elizabeth Mongan jointly owned this drawing. After Agnes’ passing, Elizabeth became the sole owner and bequeathed the drawing to the Massachusetts Audubon Society. 3. It is unverified yet highly likely that Agnes and Elizabeth Mongan acquired the drawing directly from H.M. Calmann.
