Male Head in Achaemenid Persian Style

Description
This clean shaven head is surmounted by a wide mass of hair which extends diagonally downward to back of neck where it rolls up. Upper edge of roll is carinated and extends all the way around the hair including the forehead. Small rounded relief projections indicate ears. On top is a cylindrical, straight sided cap with a raised circular are surrounded by a hollow channel. This surface bears a central punctate point from which radiate fine grooves at ninety degree angles. This surface on the top of the head is a remnant of the original block from which the head was carved. The sunken point and lines radiating from it are parts of the grid laid out on the block to guide the sculptor. This head is purportedly from Egypt and carved in the Achaemenid Persian style. It may have originally belonged to a standing figure.
