George Howard, ninth earl of Carlisle. Howard was a Pre-Raphaelite landscape painter and a friend of many of the professional Pre-Raphaelite artists, especially Burne-Jones. This portrait was included -- laid loosely in the binding -- of a set of William Blake's engraved illustrations to the Book of Job, a set of large-paper proofs on china paper, bound by Rivière. Howard's signature is on the flyleaf.
