This painting depicts a bearded ruler, probably Nadir Shah of Persia (r. 1736-1747) seated on an open terrace. He leans against a large, gold, cylindrical pillow decorated with birds and flowers. He wears a bright orange robe (jama) and holds a long, curved saber on his lap.
