19th century
The painting features a portrait of a ruler, identified by the inscription as “Maharaja Fateh Singh of Jodhpur”. However, there is no record of such a ruler for the Jodphur State, also known as the Marwar Kingdom. Due to the distinct facial hair, the figure here may represent, instead, Maharaja Ram Singh of Marwar (r. 1730-1772). He wears a red robe (jama) decorated with gold paisleys and a green waist sash (patka). To signify his royal status, he wears a turban with ornamental decoration, including a bejeweled turban pin (sarpech). Peeking from his side is the jewel-encrusted hilt of his punch-dagger (katar). He holds onto a sword by its pommel. The maharaja is also adorned with jewelry – such as bracelets, necklaces, rings, and an earring. Rajput Style, Marwar School.
